Verse (7:173), Word 12 - Quranic Grammar

The twelfth word of verse (7:173) is divided into 4 morphological segments. An interrogative alif, supplemental particle, verb and object pronoun. The prefixed alif is an interrogative particle used to form a question and is usually translated as "is", "are", or "do". The supplemental particle fa is usually translated as "then" or "so". The form IV imperfect verb (فعل مضارع) is second person masculine singular and is in the indicative mood (مرفوع). The verb's triliteral root is hā lām kāf (ه ل ك). The attached object pronoun is first person plural.

Sahih International: Or [lest] you say, "It was only that our fathers associated [others in worship] with Allah before, and we were but descendants after them. Then would You destroy us for what the falsifiers have done?"
