Verse (74:42), Word 4 - Quranic Grammar


The fourth word of verse (74:42) is a proper noun in the genitive case (مجرور). The case marker is a fatḥah instead of a kasrah because the proper noun is a diptote (ممنوع من الصرف).

Chapter (74) sūrat l-mudathir (The One Enveloped)

PN – genitive proper noun → Saqar اسم علم مجرور بالفتحة بدلاً من الكسرة لأنه ممنوع من الصرف

The analysis above refers to the 42nd verse of chapter 74 (sūrat l-mudathir):

Sahih International: [And asking them], "What put you into Saqar?"

"Feminine" may be added which will also help indicate the reason of existence of "fatha" instead of kasra.
