Verse (5:38), Word 3 - Quranic Grammar

The third word of verse (5:38) is divided into 3 morphological segments. A supplemental particle, verb and subject pronoun. The supplemental particle fa is usually translated as "then" or "so". The imperative verb (فعل أمر) is second person masculine plural. The verb's triliteral root is qāf ṭā ʿayn (ق ط ع). The suffix (الواو) is an attached subject pronoun.

Sahih International: [As for] the thief, the male and the female, amputate their hands in recompense for what they committed as a deterrent [punishment] from Allah. And Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise.
