Verse (5:31), Word 23 - Quranic Grammar

The 23rd word of verse (5:31) is divided into 2 morphological segments. A particle of cause and verb. The prefixed particle fa is usually translated as "then" or "so". The particle is used to indicate cause and makes the following verb subjunctive. The form IV perfect verb (فعل ماض) is third person masculine singular. The verb's triliteral root is ṣād bā ḥā (ص ب ح). The verb (اصبح) belongs to a special group of words known as kāna and her sisters (كان واخواتها).

Sahih International: Then Allah sent a crow searching in the ground to show him how to hide the disgrace of his brother. He said, "O woe to me! Have I failed to be like this crow and hide the body of my brother?" And he became of the regretful.
