Verse (57:16), Word 8 - Quranic Grammar

The eighth word of verse (57:16) is divided into 2 morphological segments. A preposition and verbal noun. The prefixed preposition lām is usually translated as "for". The verbal noun is masculine and is in the genitive case (مجرور). The verbal noun's triliteral root is dhāl kāf rā (ذ ك ر). Together the segments form a preposition phrase known as jār wa majrūr (جار ومجرور).

Sahih International: Has the time not come for those who have believed that their hearts should become humbly submissive at the remembrance of Allah and what has come down of the truth? And let them not be like those who were given the Scripture before, and a long period passed over them, so their hearts hardened; and many of them are defiantly disobedient.
