Verse (49:11), Word 20 - Quranic Grammar

The twentieth word of verse (49:11) is divided into 2 morphological segments. A verb and subject pronoun. The imperfect verb (فعل مضارع) is third person feminine plural and is in the subjunctive mood (منصوب). The verb's triliteral root is kāf wāw nūn (ك و ن). The verb (يك) belongs to a special group of words known as kāna and her sisters (كان واخواتها). The suffix (النون) is an attached subject pronoun.

Verse (49:11)

The analysis above refers to the eleventh verse of chapter 49 (sūrat l-ḥujurāt):

Sahih International: O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.
