Verse (42:21), Word 16 - Quranic Grammar

The sixteenth word of verse (42:21) is divided into 2 morphological segments. An emphatic prefix and verb. The prefixed particle lām is usually translated as "surely" or "indeed" and is used to add emphasis. The passive perfect verb (فعل ماض) is third person masculine singular. The verb's triliteral root is qāf ḍād yā (ق ض ي).

Sahih International: Or have they other deities who have ordained for them a religion to which Allah has not consented? But if not for the decisive word, it would have been concluded between them. And indeed, the wrongdoers will have a painful punishment.
