Verse (40:5), Word 12 - Quranic Grammar

The twelfth word of verse (40:5) is divided into 4 morphological segments. A particle of purpose, verb, subject pronoun and object pronoun. The prefixed particle lām is used to indicate the purpose of an action and makes the following verb subjunctive. The imperfect verb (فعل مضارع) is third person masculine plural and is in the subjunctive mood (منصوب). The verb's triliteral root is hamza khā dhāl (أ خ ذ). The suffix (الواو) is an attached subject pronoun. The attached object pronoun is third person masculine singular.

Verse (40:5)

The analysis above refers to the fifth verse of chapter 40 (sūrat ghāfir):

Sahih International: The people of Noah denied before them and the [disbelieving] factions after them, and every nation intended [a plot] for their messenger to seize him, and they disputed by [using] falsehood to [attempt to] invalidate thereby the truth. So I seized them, and how [terrible] was My penalty.
