Verse (40:22), Word 8 - Quranic Grammar

The eighth word of verse (40:22) is divided into 3 morphological segments. A resumption particle, verb and object pronoun. The connective particle fa is usually translated as "then" or "so" and is used to indicate a sequence of events. The perfect verb (فعل ماض) is third person masculine singular. The verb's triliteral root is hamza khā dhāl (أ خ ذ). The attached object pronoun is third person masculine plural.

Sahih International: That was because their messengers were coming to them with clear proofs, but they disbelieved, so Allah seized them. Indeed, He is Powerful and severe in punishment.
