Verse (40:22), Word 3 - Quranic Grammar

The third word of verse (40:22) is a perfect verb (فعل ماض). The verb is third person feminine singular. The verb's triliteral root is kāf wāw nūn (ك و ن). The verb (كانت) belongs to a special group of words known as kāna and her sisters (كان واخواتها).

Sahih International: That was because their messengers were coming to them with clear proofs, but they disbelieved, so Allah seized them. Indeed, He is Powerful and severe in punishment.
