Verse (3:178), Word 13 - Quranic Grammar

The thirteenth word of verse (3:178) is divided into 3 morphological segments. A particle of purpose, verb and subject pronoun. The prefixed particle lām is used to indicate the purpose of an action and makes the following verb subjunctive. The form VIII imperfect verb (فعل مضارع) is third person masculine plural and is in the subjunctive mood (منصوب). The verb's triliteral root is zāy yā dāl (ز ي د). The suffix (الواو) is an attached subject pronoun.

Sahih International: And let not those who disbelieve ever think that [because] We extend their time [of enjoyment] it is better for them. We only extend it for them so that they may increase in sin, and for them is a humiliating punishment.
