Verse (3:178), Word 1 - Quranic Grammar

The first word of verse (3:178) is divided into 2 morphological segments. A resumption particle and prohibition particle. The connective particle wa is usually translated as "then" or "so" and is used to indicate a sequence of events. The prohibition particle (حرف نهي) is used to form a negative imperative and places the following verb into the jussive mood (مجزوم).

Sahih International: And let not those who disbelieve ever think that [because] We extend their time [of enjoyment] it is better for them. We only extend it for them so that they may increase in sin, and for them is a humiliating punishment.
