Verse (39:38), Word 10 - Quranic Grammar

The tenth word of verse (39:38) is divided into 4 morphological segments. An interrogative alif, supplemental particle, verb and subject pronoun. The prefixed alif is an interrogative particle used to form a question and is usually translated as "is", "are", or "do". The supplemental particle fa is usually translated as "then" or "so". The perfect verb (فعل ماض) is second person masculine plural. The verb's triliteral root is rā hamza yā (ر أ ي). The suffix (التاء) is an attached subject pronoun.

Verse (39:38)

Sahih International: And if you asked them, "Who created the heavens and the earth?" they would surely say, " Allah." Say, "Then have you considered what you invoke besides Allah ? If Allah intended me harm, are they removers of His harm; or if He intended me mercy, are they withholders of His mercy?" Say, "Sufficient for me is Allah ; upon Him [alone] rely the [wise] reliers."
