Verse (34:9), Word 27 - Quranic Grammar

The 27th word of verse (34:9) is divided into 2 morphological segments. A preposition and noun. The prefixed preposition lām is usually translated as "for". The noun is masculine and is in the genitive case (مجرور). The noun's triliteral root is kāf lām lām (ك ل ل). Together the segments form a preposition phrase known as jār wa majrūr (جار ومجرور).

Sahih International: Then, do they not look at what is before them and what is behind them of the heaven and earth? If We should will, We could cause the earth to swallow them or [could] let fall upon them fragments from the sky. Indeed in that is a sign for every servant turning back [to Allah].
