Verse (33:20), Word 18 - Quranic Grammar

The eighteenth word of verse (33:20) is divided into 2 morphological segments. A verb and subject pronoun. The perfect verb (فعل ماض) is third person masculine plural. The verb's triliteral root is kāf wāw nūn (ك و ن). The verb (كان) belongs to a special group of words known as kāna and her sisters (كان واخواتها). The suffix (الواو) is an attached subject pronoun.

Verse (33:20)

The analysis above refers to the twentieth verse of chapter 33 (sūrat l-aḥzāb):

Sahih International: They think the companies have not [yet] withdrawn. And if the companies should come [again], they would wish they were in the desert among the bedouins, inquiring [from afar] about your news. And if they should be among you, they would not fight except for a little.
