Verse (2:175), Word 8 - Quranic Grammar


The eighth word of verse (2:175) is divided into 2 morphological segments. A resumption particle and relative pronoun. The connective particle fa is usually translated as "then" or "so" and is used to indicate a sequence of events.

ما in this context is NOT a relative pronoun (اسم موصول). It is called ما النكرة التامة (Indefinite Complete Noun) This ما is a noun and it is used in the place of the word شيء (thing) or something similarly abstract. It is used in very particular situations,

such as before a verb expressing astonishment (فعل التعجب) --- here it is the verb أصبر 2:175:9 -- hence the translation "How patient they are......!" expressing astonishment at the utter stupidity of the heedless disbelievers!
