Verse (18:18), Word 17 - Quranic Grammar

The seventeenth word of verse (18:18) is divided into 3 morphological segments. An emphatic prefix, verb and subject pronoun. The prefixed particle lām is usually translated as "surely" or "indeed" and is used to add emphasis. The form II perfect verb (فعل ماض) is second person masculine singular. The verb's triliteral root is wāw lām yā (و ل ي). The suffix (التاء) is an attached subject pronoun.

Sahih International: And you would think them awake, while they were asleep. And We turned them to the right and to the left, while their dog stretched his forelegs at the entrance. If you had looked at them, you would have turned from them in flight and been filled by them with terror.
