Verse (12:21), Word 17 - Quranic Grammar

__

The seventeenth word of verse (12:21) is divided into 2 morphological segments. A preposition and proper noun. The prefixed preposition lām is usually translated as "for". The proper noun is masculine and is in the genitive case (مجرور). The case marker is a fatḥah instead of a kasrah because the proper noun is a diptote (ممنوع من الصرف). Together the segments form a preposition phrase known as jār wa majrūr (جار ومجرور).

Chapter (12) sūrat yūsuf (Joseph)

Verse (12:21)

The analysis above refers to the 21st verse of chapter 12 (sūrat yūsuf):

Sahih International: And the one from Egypt who bought him said to his wife, "Make his residence comfortable. Perhaps he will benefit us, or we will adopt him as a son." And thus, We established Joseph in the land that We might teach him the interpretation of events. And Allah is predominant over His affair, but most of the people do not know.
