Quran Dictionary - ز ل ل

The triliteral root zāy lām lām (ز ل ل) occurs four times in the Quran, in three derived forms:

  • twice as the form I verb zalal (زَلَلْ)
  • once as the form IV verb azalla (أَزَلَّ)
  • once as the form X verb is'tazalla (ٱسْتَزَلَّ)

Verb (form I) - to slip

(2:209:2) zalaltumyou slip فَإِنْ زَلَلْتُمْ مِنْ بَعْدِ مَا جَاءَتْكُمُ الْبَيِّنَاتُ فَاعْلَمُوا أَنَّ اللَّهَ عَزِيزٌ حَكِيمٌ
(16:94:6) fatazillalest, should slip وَلَا تَتَّخِذُوا أَيْمَانَكُمْ دَخَلًا بَيْنَكُمْ فَتَزِلَّ قَدَمٌ بَعْدَ ثُبُوتِهَا

Verb (form IV) - to make slip

(2:36:1) fa-azallahumāThen made [both of] them slip فَأَزَلَّهُمَا الشَّيْطَانُ عَنْهَا فَأَخْرَجَهُمَا مِمَّا كَانَا فِيهِ

Verb (form X) - to make slip

(3:155:9) is'tazallahumumade them slip إِنَّمَا اسْتَزَلَّهُمُ الشَّيْطَانُ بِبَعْضِ مَا كَسَبُوا
