The quadriliteral root wāw sīn wāw sīn (و س و س) occurs five times in the Quran, in two derived forms:

  • four times as the form I verb waswasa (وَسْوَسَ)
  • once as the noun waswās (وَسْوَاس)

Verb (form I) - to whisper

(7:20:1) fawaswasaThen whispered فَوَسْوَسَ لَهُمَا الشَّيْطَانُ لِيُبْدِيَ لَهُمَا مَا وُورِيَ عَنْهُمَا
(20:120:1) fawaswasaThen whispered فَوَسْوَسَ إِلَيْهِ الشَّيْطَانُ قَالَ يَا آدَمُ هَلْ أَدُلُّكَ عَلَىٰ شَجَرَةِ الْخُلْدِ
(50:16:6) tuwaswisuwhispers وَلَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا الْإِنْسَانَ وَنَعْلَمُ مَا تُوَسْوِسُ بِهِ نَفْسُهُ
(114:5:2) yuwaswisuwhispers الَّذِي يُوَسْوِسُ فِي صُدُورِ النَّاسِ
