The triliteral root sīn jīm nūn (س ج ن) occurs 12 times in the Quran, in four derived forms:

  • three times as the form I verb yus'jana (يُسْجَنَ)
  • six times as the noun sij'n (سِّجْن)
  • twice as the noun sijjīn (سِجِّين)
  • once as the passive participle masjūnīn (مَسْجُونِين)

Verb (form I) - to imprison

(12:25:20) yus'janahe be imprisoned إِلَّا أَنْ يُسْجَنَ أَوْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ
(12:32:16) layus'janannasurely, he will be imprisoned لَيُسْجَنَنَّ وَلَيَكُونًا مِنَ الصَّاغِرِينَ
(12:35:9) layasjununnahusurely they should imprison him ثُمَّ بَدَا لَهُمْ مِنْ بَعْدِ مَا رَأَوُا الْآيَاتِ لَيَسْجُنُنَّهُ حَتَّىٰ حِينٍ

(12:100:25) l-sij'nithe prison وَقَدْ أَحْسَنَ بِي إِذْ أَخْرَجَنِي مِنَ السِّجْنِ وَجَاءَ بِكُمْ مِنَ الْبَدْوِ
