The triliteral root fā tā yā (ف ت ي) occurs 21 times in the Quran, in seven derived forms:

  • five times as the form IV verb yuf'tī (يُفْتِي)
  • six times as the form X verb yastaftu (يَسْتَفْتُ)
  • once as the noun fatan (فَتًى)
  • three times as the noun fatā (فَتَىٰ)
  • twice as the noun fatayāt (فَتَيَٰت)
  • once as the noun fatayān (فَتَيَان)
  • three times as the noun fit'yat (فِتْيَة)

Verb (form IV) - to give ruling, to explain, to advise

(4:127:6) yuf'tīkumgives you the ruling وَيَسْتَفْتُونَكَ فِي النِّسَاءِ قُلِ اللَّهُ يُفْتِيكُمْ فِيهِنَّ
