Quran Dictionary - ف ر ط

The triliteral root fā rā ṭā (ف ر ط) occurs eight times in the Quran, in four derived forms:

  • once as the form I verb yafruṭa (يَفْرُطَ)
  • five times as the form II verb farraṭ (فَرَّط)
  • once as the noun furuṭ (فُرُط)
  • once as the form IV passive participle muf'raṭūn (مُّفْرَطُون)

Verb (form I) - to hasten

(20:45:6) yafruṭahe will hasten قَالَا رَبَّنَا إِنَّنَا نَخَافُ أَنْ يَفْرُطَ عَلَيْنَا أَوْ أَنْ يَطْغَىٰ

Verb (form II) - to neglect, to fail

(6:31:16) farraṭnāwe neglected قَالُوا يَا حَسْرَتَنَا عَلَىٰ مَا فَرَّطْنَا فِيهَا
(6:38:14) farraṭnāWe have neglected مَا فَرَّطْنَا فِي الْكِتَابِ مِنْ شَيْءٍ
(6:61:17) yufarriṭūnafail تَوَفَّتْهُ رُسُلُنَا وَهُمْ لَا يُفَرِّطُونَ
(12:80:21) farraṭtumyou failed وَمِنْ قَبْلُ مَا فَرَّطْتُمْ فِي يُوسُفَ
(39:56:7) farraṭtuI neglected أَنْ تَقُولَ نَفْسٌ يَا حَسْرَتَا عَلَىٰ مَا فَرَّطْتُ فِي جَنْبِ اللَّهِ

Noun

(18:28:30) furuṭan(in) excess وَاتَّبَعَ هَوَاهُ وَكَانَ أَمْرُهُ فُرُطًا

Passive participle (form IV)

(16:62:17) muf'raṭūna(will) be abandoned لَا جَرَمَ أَنَّ لَهُمُ النَّارَ وَأَنَّهُمْ مُفْرَطُونَ
