The triliteral root hamza sīn rā (أ س ر) occurs six times in the Quran, in three derived forms:

  • once as the form I verb tasiru (تَأْسِرُ)
  • once as the noun asr (أَسْر)
  • four times as the noun asīr (أَسِير)

Verb (form I) - to take captive

(33:26:15) watasirūnaand you took captive وَقَذَفَ فِي قُلُوبِهِمُ الرُّعْبَ فَرِيقًا تَقْتُلُونَ وَتَأْسِرُونَ

Noun - form

(76:28:4) asrahumtheir forms نَحْنُ خَلَقْنَاهُمْ وَشَدَدْنَا أَسْرَهُمْ

Noun - captive, prisoner of war

(2:85:17) usārā(as) captives وَإِنْ يَأْتُوكُمْ أُسَارَىٰ تُفَادُوهُمْ وَهُوَ مُحَرَّمٌ عَلَيْكُمْ
(8:67:7) asrāprisoners of war مَا كَانَ لِنَبِيٍّ أَنْ يَكُونَ لَهُ أَسْرَىٰ حَتَّىٰ يُثْخِنَ فِي الْأَرْضِ
(8:70:8) l-asrāthe captives يَا أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ قُلْ لِمَنْ فِي أَيْدِيكُمْ مِنَ الْأَسْرَىٰ
(76:8:7) wa-asīranand (the) captive وَيُطْعِمُونَ الطَّعَامَ عَلَىٰ حُبِّهِ مِسْكِينًا وَيَتِيمًا وَأَسِيرًا
