Verse (9:47), Word 8 - Quranic Grammar

The eighth word of verse (9:47) is divided into 4 morphological segments. A conjunction, emphatic prefix, verb and subject pronoun. The prefixed conjunction wa is usually translated as "and". The prefixed particle lām is usually translated as "surely" or "indeed" and is used to add emphasis. The form IV perfect verb (فعل ماض) is third person masculine plural. The verb's triliteral root is wāw ḍād ʿayn (و ض ع). The suffix (الواو) is an attached subject pronoun.

Sahih International: Had they gone forth with you, they would not have increased you except in confusion, and they would have been active among you, seeking [to cause] you fitnah. And among you are avid listeners to them. And Allah is Knowing of the wrongdoers.
