Verse (9:42), Word 7 - Quranic Grammar

The seventh word of verse (9:42) is divided into 4 morphological segments. An emphatic prefix, verb, subject pronoun and object pronoun. The prefixed particle lām is usually translated as "surely" or "indeed" and is used to add emphasis. The form VIII perfect verb (فعل ماض) is third person masculine plural. The verb's triliteral root is tā bā ʿayn (ت ب ع). The suffix (الواو) is an attached subject pronoun. The attached object pronoun is second person masculine singular.

Sahih International: Had it been an easy gain and a moderate trip, the hypocrites would have followed you, but distant to them was the journey. And they will swear by Allah , "If we were able, we would have gone forth with you," destroying themselves [through false oaths], and Allah knows that indeed they are liars.
