Verse (9:31), Word 14 - Quranic Grammar

The fourteenth word of verse (9:31) is divided into 3 morphological segments. A particle of purpose, verb and subject pronoun. The prefixed particle lām is used to indicate the purpose of an action and makes the following verb subjunctive. The imperfect verb (فعل مضارع) is third person masculine plural and is in the subjunctive mood (منصوب). The verb's triliteral root is ʿayn bā dāl (ع ب د). The suffix (الواو) is an attached subject pronoun.

Sahih International: They have taken their scholars and monks as lords besides Allah , and [also] the Messiah, the son of Mary. And they were not commanded except to worship one God; there is no deity except Him. Exalted is He above whatever they associate with Him.
