Verse (7:163), Word 5 - Quranic Grammar

The fifth word of verse (7:163) is a perfect verb (فعل ماض). The verb is third person feminine singular. The verb's triliteral root is kāf wāw nūn (ك و ن). The verb (كانت) belongs to a special group of words known as kāna and her sisters (كان واخواتها).

Sahih International: And ask them about the town that was by the sea - when they transgressed in [the matter of] the sabbath - when their fish came to them openly on their sabbath day, and the day they had no sabbath they did not come to them. Thus did We give them trial because they were defiantly disobedient.
