Verse (5:73), Word 9 - Quranic Grammar

__

The ninth word of verse (5:73) is divided into 2 morphological segments. A resumption particle and negative particle. The connective particle wa is usually translated as "then" or "so" and is used to indicate a sequence of events. The negative particle acts like the verb laysa (ليس). This verb belongs to a special group of words known as kāna and her sisters (كان واخواتها).

The analysis above refers to the 73rd verse of chapter 5 (sūrat l-māidah):

Sahih International: They have certainly disbelieved who say, "Allah is the third of three." And there is no god except one God. And if they do not desist from what they are saying, there will surely afflict the disbelievers among them a painful punishment.
