Verse (58:4), Word 4 - Quranic Grammar


The fourth word of verse (58:4) is divided into 2 morphological segments. A resumption particle and noun. The connective particle fa is usually translated as "then" or "so" and is used to indicate a sequence of events. The noun is masculine and is in the nominative case (مرفوع). The noun's triliteral root is ṣād wāw mīm (ص و م).

Verse (58:4)

The analysis above refers to the fourth verse of chapter 58 (sūrat l-mujādilah):

Sahih International: And he who does not find [a slave] - then a fast for two months consecutively before they touch one another; and he who is unable - then the feeding of sixty poor persons. That is for you to believe [completely] in Allah and His Messenger; and those are the limits [set by] Allah. And for the disbelievers is a painful punishment.
