Verse (4:159), Word 1 - Quranic Grammar

The first word of verse (4:159) is divided into 2 morphological segments. A resumption particle and negative particle. The connective particle wa is usually translated as "then" or "so" and is used to indicate a sequence of events. The negative particle acts like the verb laysa (ليس). This verb belongs to a special group of words known as kāna and her sisters (كان واخواتها).

The analysis above refers to the 159th verse of chapter 4 (sūrat l-nisāa):

Sahih International: And there is none from the People of the Scripture but that he will surely believe in Jesus before his death. And on the Day of Resurrection he will be against them a witness.
