Verse (40:85), Word 2 - Quranic Grammar

The second word of verse (40:85) is an imperfect verb (فعل مضارع). The verb is third person masculine singular and is in the jussive mood (مجزوم). The verb's triliteral root is kāf wāw nūn (ك و ن). The verb (يك) belongs to a special group of words known as kāna and her sisters (كان واخواتها).

Sahih International: But never did their faith benefit them once they saw Our punishment. [It is] the established way of Allah which has preceded among His servants. And the disbelievers thereupon lost [all].
