Verse (40:5), Word 14 - Quranic Grammar

The fourteenth word of verse (40:5) is divided into 2 morphological segments. A preposition and active participle. The prefixed preposition bi is usually translated as "with" or "by". The active participle is masculine and is in the genitive case (مجرور). The active participle's triliteral root is bā ṭā lām (ب ط ل). Sahih International: The people of Noah denied before them and the [disbelieving] factions after them, and every nation intended [a plot] for their messenger to seize him, and they disputed by [using] falsehood to [attempt to] invalidate thereby the truth. So I seized them, and how [terrible] was My penalty.
