Verse (3:14), Word 2 - Quranic Grammar

The second word of verse (3:14) is divided into 2 morphological segments. A preposition and noun. The prefixed preposition lām is usually translated as "for". The noun is masculine plural and is in the genitive case (مجرور). The noun's triliteral root is nūn wāw sīn (ن و س). Together the segments form a preposition phrase known as jār wa majrūr (جار ومجرور).

Sahih International: Beautified for people is the love of that which they desire - of women and sons, heaped-up sums of gold and silver, fine branded horses, and cattle and tilled land. That is the enjoyment of worldly life, but Allah has with Him the best return.
