Verse (31:14), Word 15 - Quranic Grammar

The fifteenth word of verse (31:14) is divided into 4 morphological segments. A conjunction, preposition, noun and possessive pronoun. The prefixed conjunction wa is usually translated as "and". The prefixed preposition lām is usually translated as "for". The noun is masculine dual and is in the genitive case (مجرور). The noun's triliteral root is wāw lām dāl (و ل د). The attached possessive pronoun is second person masculine singular. Together the segments form a preposition phrase known as jār wa majrūr (جار ومجرور).

Sahih International: And We have enjoined upon man [care] for his parents. His mother carried him, [increasing her] in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning is in two years. Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the [final] destination.
