Verse (31:13), Word 4 - Quranic Grammar

The fourth word of verse (31:13) is divided into 3 morphological segments. A preposition, noun and possessive pronoun. The prefixed preposition lām is usually translated as "for". The noun is masculine and is in the genitive case (مجرور). The noun's triliteral root is bā nūn yā (ب ن ي). The attached possessive pronoun is third person masculine singular. Together the segments form a preposition phrase known as jār wa majrūr (جار ومجرور).

Sahih International: And [mention, O Muhammad], when Luqman said to his son while he was instructing him, "O my son, do not associate [anything] with Allah. Indeed, association [with him] is great injustice."
