Verse (2:30), Word 11 - Quranic Grammar

The eleventh word of verse (2:30) is divided into 2 morphological segments. An interrogative alif and verb. The prefixed alif is an interrogative particle used to form a question and is usually translated as "is", "are", or "do". The imperfect verb (فعل مضارع) is second person masculine singular and is in the indicative mood (مرفوع). The verb's triliteral root is jīm ʿayn lām (ج ع ل).

Sahih International: And [mention, O Muhammad], when your Lord said to the angels, "Indeed, I will make upon the earth a successive authority." They said, "Will You place upon it one who causes corruption therein and sheds blood, while we declare Your praise and sanctify You?" Allah said, "Indeed, I know that which you do not know."
