Verse (24:40), Word 2 - Quranic Grammar

The second word of verse (24:40) is divided into 2 morphological segments. A preposition and noun. The prefixed preposition ka is usually translated as "like" or "as". The indefinite noun is feminine plural and is in the genitive case (مجرور). The noun's triliteral root is ẓā lām mīm (ظ ل م). Together the segments form a preposition phrase known as jār wa majrūr (جار ومجرور).

Sahih International: Or [they are] like darknesses within an unfathomable sea which is covered by waves, upon which are waves, over which are clouds - darknesses, some of them upon others. When one puts out his hand [therein], he can hardly see it. And he to whom Allah has not granted light - for him there is no light.
