Verse (13:14), Word 17 - Quranic Grammar

The seventeenth word of verse (13:14) is divided into 2 morphological segments. A particle of purpose and verb. The prefixed particle lām is used to indicate the purpose of an action and makes the following verb subjunctive. The imperfect verb (فعل مضارع) is third person masculine singular and is in the subjunctive mood (منصوب). The verb's triliteral root is bā lām ghayn (ب ل غ).

Verse (13:14)

The analysis above refers to the fourteenth verse of chapter 13 (sūrat l-raʿd):

Sahih International: To Him [alone] is the supplication of truth. And those they call upon besides Him do not respond to them with a thing, except as one who stretches his hands toward water [from afar, calling it] to reach his mouth, but it will not reach it [thus]. And the supplication of the disbelievers is not but in error [i.e. futility].
