Verse (12:76), Word 13 - Quranic Grammar

__

The thirteenth word of verse (12:76) is divided into 2 morphological segments. A preposition and proper noun. The prefixed preposition lām is usually translated as "for". The proper noun is masculine and is in the genitive case (مجرور). The case marker is a fatḥah instead of a kasrah because the proper noun is a diptote (ممنوع من الصرف). Together the segments form a preposition phrase known as jār wa majrūr (جار ومجرور).

Verse (12:76)

The analysis above refers to the 76th verse of chapter 12 (sūrat yūsuf):

Sahih International: So he began [the search] with their bags before the bag of his brother; then he extracted it from the bag of his brother. Thus did We plan for Joseph. He could not have taken his brother within the religion of the king except that Allah willed. We raise in degrees whom We will, but over every possessor of knowledge is one [more] knowing.
