Verse (12:38), Word 5 - Quranic Grammar

__

The fifth word of verse (12:38) is divided into 2 morphological segments. A conjunction and proper noun. The prefixed conjunction wa is usually translated as "and". The proper noun is in the genitive case (مجرور). The case marker is a fatḥah instead of a kasrah because the proper noun is a diptote (ممنوع من الصرف).

Chapter (12) sūrat yūsuf (Joseph)

(12:38:5)
wa-is'ḥāqa

CONJ – prefixed conjunction wa (and)
PN – genitive proper noun → Isaac

Verse (12:38)

The analysis above refers to the 38th verse of chapter 12 (sūrat yūsuf):

Sahih International: And I have followed the religion of my fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. And it was not for us to associate anything with Allah. That is from the favor of Allah upon us and upon the people, but most of the people are not grateful.
