Verse (12:17), Word 12 - Quranic Grammar

The twelfth word of verse (12:17) is divided into 2 morphological segments. A resumption particle and negative particle. The connective particle wa is usually translated as "then" or "so" and is used to indicate a sequence of events. The negative particle acts like the verb laysa (ليس). This verb belongs to a special group of words known as kāna and her sisters (كان واخواتها).

The analysis above refers to the seventeenth verse of chapter 12 (sūrat yūsuf):

Sahih International: They said, "O our father, indeed we went racing each other and left Joseph with our possessions, and a wolf ate him. But you would not believe us, even if we were truthful."
