The triliteral root thā nūn yā (ث ن ي) occurs 29 times in the Quran, in seven derived forms:

  • once as the form I verb yathnu (يَثْنُ)
  • once as the form X verb yastathnu (يَسْتَثْنُ)
  • seven times as the noun ith'natayn (ٱثْنَتَيْن)
  • 13 times as the noun ith'nayn (ٱثْنَيْن)
  • twice as the noun thānī (ثَانِى)
  • twice as the noun mathānī (مَّثَانِى)
  • three times as the noun mathnā (مَثْنَىٰ)
