The triliteral root mīm rā yā (م ر ي) occurs 20 times in the Quran, in six derived forms:

  • four times as the form I verb tamāra (تَمَارَ)
  • once as the form III verb tumāri (تُمَارِ)
  • five times as the form VIII verb yamtaru (يَمْتَرُ)
  • once as the noun mirā (مِرَآء)
  • five times as the noun mir'yat (مِرْيَة)
  • four times as the form VIII active participle mum'tarīn (مُمْتَرِين)

Verb (form I) - to dispute, to doubt

(42:18:17) yumārūnadispute أَلَا إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يُمَارُونَ فِي السَّاعَةِ لَفِي ضَلَالٍ بَعِيدٍ
(53:12:1) afatumārūnahuThen will you dispute with him أَفَتُمَارُونَهُ عَلَىٰ مَا يَرَىٰ
(53:55:4) tatamārāwill you doubt فَبِأَيِّ آلَاءِ رَبِّكَ تَتَمَارَىٰ
(54:36:4) fatamārawbut they disputed وَلَقَدْ أَنْذَرَهُمْ بَطْشَتَنَا فَتَمَارَوْا بِالنُّذُرِ

Verb (form III) - to argue

(18:22:24) tumāriargue فَلَا تُمَارِ فِيهِمْ إِلَّا مِرَاءً ظَاهِرًا وَلَا تَسْتَفْتِ فِيهِمْ مِنْهُمْ أَحَدًا

Verb (form VIII) - to dispute, to doubt

(6:2:14) tamtarūnadoubt ثُمَّ قَضَىٰ أَجَلًا وَأَجَلٌ مُسَمًّى عِنْدَهُ ثُمَّ أَنْتُمْ تَمْتَرُونَ
(15:63:7) yamtarūnadisputing قَالُوا بَلْ جِئْنَاكَ بِمَا كَانُوا فِيهِ يَمْتَرُونَ
(19:34:9) yamtarūnathey dispute ذَٰلِكَ عِيسَى ابْنُ مَرْيَمَ قَوْلَ الْحَقِّ الَّذِي فِيهِ يَمْتَرُونَ
(43:61:5) tamtarunna(be) doubtful وَإِنَّهُ لَعِلْمٌ لِلسَّاعَةِ فَلَا تَمْتَرُنَّ بِهَا وَاتَّبِعُونِ
(44:50:6) tamtarūnadoubt إِنَّ هَٰذَا مَا كُنْتُمْ بِهِ تَمْتَرُونَ

(2:147:7) l-mum'tarīnathe doubters الْحَقُّ مِنْ رَبِّكَ فَلَا تَكُونَنَّ مِنَ الْمُمْتَرِينَ
(3:60:7) l-mum'tarīnathe doubters الْحَقُّ مِنْ رَبِّكَ فَلَا تَكُنْ مِنَ الْمُمْتَرِينَ
