Quran Dictionary - ل ي ن

The triliteral root lām yā nūn (ل ي ن) occurs five times in the Quran, in four derived forms:

  • twice as the form I verb lin (لِن)
  • once as the form IV verb ala (أَلَ)
  • once as the adjective layyin (لَّيِّن)
  • once as the noun līnat (لِّينَة)

Verb (form I) - to deal gently, to relax

(3:159:5) lintayou dealt gently فَبِمَا رَحْمَةٍ مِنَ اللَّهِ لِنْتَ لَهُمْ
(39:23:15) talīnurelax ثُمَّ تَلِينُ جُلُودُهُمْ وَقُلُوبُهُمْ إِلَىٰ ذِكْرِ اللَّهِ

Verb (form IV) - to make pliable

(34:10:10) wa-alannāAnd We made pliable وَأَلَنَّا لَهُ الْحَدِيدَ

Adjective

(20:44:4) layyinangentle فَقُولَا لَهُ قَوْلًا لَيِّنًا لَعَلَّهُ يَتَذَكَّرُ أَوْ يَخْشَىٰ

Noun

(59:5:4) līnatin(the) palm-trees مَا قَطَعْتُمْ مِنْ لِينَةٍ أَوْ تَرَكْتُمُوهَا قَائِمَةً عَلَىٰ أُصُولِهَا فَبِإِذْنِ اللَّهِ
