Quran Dictionary - غ س ل

The triliteral root ghayn sīn lām (غ س ل) occurs four times in the Quran, in four derived forms:

  • once as the form I verb igh'silu (ٱغْسِلُ)
  • once as the form VIII verb taghtasilu (تَغْتَسِلُ)
  • once as the noun ghis'līn (غِسْلِين)
  • once as the form VIII passive participle mugh'tasal (مُغْتَسَل)

Verb (form I) - to wash

(5:6:8) fa-igh'silūthen wash فَاغْسِلُوا وُجُوهَكُمْ وَأَيْدِيَكُمْ إِلَى الْمَرَافِقِ

Verb (form VIII) - to bathe

(4:43:19) taghtasilūyou have bathed وَلَا جُنُبًا إِلَّا عَابِرِي سَبِيلٍ حَتَّىٰ تَغْتَسِلُوا

Noun

(69:36:5) ghis'līnin(the) discharge of wounds وَلَا طَعَامٌ إِلَّا مِنْ غِسْلِينٍ

Passive participle (form VIII)

(38:42:4) mugh'tasalun(is a spring of) water to bathe ارْكُضْ بِرِجْلِكَ هَٰذَا مُغْتَسَلٌ بَارِدٌ وَشَرَابٌ
