The triliteral root bā hā tā (ب ه ت) occurs eight times in the Quran, in two derived forms:

  • twice as the form I verb buhita (بُهِتَ)
  • six times as the noun buh'tān (بُهْتَٰن)

Verb (form I) - to be bewildered, to be dumbfounded

(2:258:36) fabuhitaSo became dumbfounded فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ يَأْتِي بِالشَّمْسِ مِنَ الْمَشْرِقِ فَأْتِ بِهَا مِنَ الْمَغْرِبِ فَبُهِتَ الَّذِي كَفَرَ
(21:40:4) fatabhatuhumand bewilder them بَلْ تَأْتِيهِمْ بَغْتَةً فَتَبْهَتُهُمْ فَلَا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ رَدَّهَا

(4:20:15) buh'tānan(by) slander فَلَا تَأْخُذُوا مِنْهُ شَيْئًا أَتَأْخُذُونَهُ بُهْتَانًا وَإِثْمًا مُبِينًا

(24:16:13) buh'tānun(is) a slander مَا يَكُونُ لَنَا أَنْ نَتَكَلَّمَ بِهَٰذَا سُبْحَانَكَ هَٰذَا بُهْتَانٌ عَظِيمٌ
(33:58:10) buh'tānanfalse accusation وَالَّذِينَ يُؤْذُونَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتِ بِغَيْرِ مَا اكْتَسَبُوا فَقَدِ احْتَمَلُوا بُهْتَانًا
(60:12:22) bibuh'tāninslander وَلَا يَأْتِينَ بِبُهْتَانٍ يَفْتَرِينَهُ بَيْنَ أَيْدِيهِنَّ وَأَرْجُلِهِنَّ
