The triliteral root ʿayn wāw nūn (ع و ن) occurs 11 times in the Quran, in five derived forms:

  • twice as the form IV verb aʿāna (أَعَانَ)
  • twice as the form VI verb taʿāwanu (تَعَاوَنُ)
  • four times as the form X verb is'taʿīnu (ٱسْتَعِينُ)
  • once as the noun ʿawān (عَوَان)
  • twice as the form X passive participle mus'taʿān (مُسْتَعَان)

Verb (form IV) - to help

(18:95:7) fa-aʿīnūnībut assist me قَالَ مَا مَكَّنِّي فِيهِ رَبِّي خَيْرٌ فَأَعِينُونِي بِقُوَّةٍ
(25:4:9) wa-aʿānahuand helped him إِنْ هَٰذَا إِلَّا إِفْكٌ افْتَرَاهُ وَأَعَانَهُ عَلَيْهِ قَوْمٌ آخَرُونَ

Verb (form VI) - to help

(5:2:38) wataʿāwanūAnd help one another وَتَعَاوَنُوا عَلَى الْبِرِّ وَالتَّقْوَىٰ
(5:2:43) taʿāwanūhelp one another وَلَا تَعَاوَنُوا عَلَى الْإِثْمِ وَالْعُدْوَانِ وَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ

Verb (form X) - to seek help
