The triliteral root ʿayn qāf dāl (ع ق د) occurs seven times in the Quran, in four derived forms:

  • once as the form I verb ʿaqadat (عَقَدَتْ)
  • once as the form II verb ʿaqqad (عَقَّد)
  • four times as the noun ʿuq'dat (عُقْدَة)
  • once as the noun ʿuqūd (عُقُود)

Verb (form I) - to pledge

(4:33:9) ʿaqadatpledged وَالَّذِينَ عَقَدَتْ أَيْمَانُكُمْ فَآتُوهُمْ نَصِيبَهُمْ

(5:89:10) ʿaqqadttumuyou contracted وَلَٰكِنْ يُؤَاخِذُكُمْ بِمَا عَقَّدْتُمُ الْأَيْمَانَ
