The triliteral root ʿayn mīm rā (ع م ر) occurs 24 times in the Quran, in 10 derived forms:

  • four times as the form I verb ʿamaru (عَمَرُ)
  • five times as the form II verb yuʿammaru (يُعَمَّرُ)
  • once as the form VIII verb iʿ'tamara (ٱعْتَمَرَ)
  • once as the form X verb is'taʿmara (ٱسْتَعْمَرَ)
  • once as the noun ʿimārat (عِمَارَة)
  • once as the noun ʿamr (عَمْر)

Verb (form I) - to maintain, to build on

(9:17:5) yaʿmurūthey maintain مَا كَانَ لِلْمُشْرِكِينَ أَنْ يَعْمُرُوا مَسَاجِدَ اللَّهِ شَاهِدِينَ عَلَىٰ أَنْفُسِهِمْ بِالْكُفْرِ
(9:18:2) yaʿmuruwill maintain إِنَّمَا يَعْمُرُ مَسَاجِدَ اللَّهِ مَنْ آمَنَ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ
(30:9:18) waʿamarūhāand built (on) it كَانُوا أَشَدَّ مِنْهُمْ قُوَّةً وَأَثَارُوا الْأَرْضَ وَعَمَرُوهَا
(30:9:21) ʿamarūhāthey have built (on) it أَكْثَرَ مِمَّا عَمَرُوهَا وَجَاءَتْهُمْ رُسُلُهُمْ بِالْبَيِّنَاتِ

Verb (form II) - to grant life

(2:96:12) yuʿammaruhe could be granted a life يَوَدُّ أَحَدُهُمْ لَوْ يُعَمَّرُ أَلْفَ سَنَةٍ
(2:96:21) yuʿammarahe should be granted life وَمَا هُوَ بِمُزَحْزِحِهِ مِنَ الْعَذَابِ أَنْ يُعَمَّرَ
(35:11:20) yuʿammaruis granted life وَمَا يُعَمَّرُ مِنْ مُعَمَّرٍ وَلَا يُنْقَصُ مِنْ عُمُرِهِ إِلَّا فِي كِتَابٍ
(35:37:13) nuʿammir'kumWe give you life long enough أَوَلَمْ نُعَمِّرْكُمْ مَا يَتَذَكَّرُ فِيهِ مَنْ تَذَكَّرَ وَجَاءَكُمُ النَّذِيرُ

(2:158:11) iʿ'tamaraperforms Umrah فَمَنْ حَجَّ الْبَيْتَ أَوِ اعْتَمَرَ فَلَا جُنَاحَ عَلَيْهِ أَنْ يَطَّوَّفَ بِهِمَا

(11:61:18) wa-is'taʿmarakumand settled you هُوَ أَنْشَأَكُمْ مِنَ الْأَرْضِ وَاسْتَعْمَرَكُمْ فِيهَا

(26:18:9) ʿumurikayour life قَالَ أَلَمْ نُرَبِّكَ فِينَا وَلِيدًا وَلَبِثْتَ فِينَا مِنْ عُمُرِكَ سِنِينَ
(28:45:6) l-ʿumuruthe life وَلَٰكِنَّا أَنْشَأْنَا قُرُونًا فَتَطَاوَلَ عَلَيْهِمُ الْعُمُرُ
